After an online voting process and judging panel, artist Elena George of Savannah, Georgia, won the grand prize: a trip for two to Chile and her artwork on the label of a new Montes wine. During her stay in Chile, Elena will learn more about the varietal Carmenère at the Montes Winery from the legendary Aurelio Montes. Elena expressed her joy by saying, “[I am] so excited I can hardly contain myself; [it’s] a dream come true!

For the Share Your Carmenère contest, TGIC and Montes Wines invited artists from all over the United States to design a wine label that reflected the personality and soul of Carmenère. After hundreds of entries from 14 states poured in over the past six months, the field was narrowed down to eight finalists. “There were a lot of great entries. We were impressed with the level of talent the competition attracted,” stated TGIC’s Founder and CEO, Alex Guarachi. “I think Elena’s label captured the care Montes takes throughout the winemaking process. From vine to bottle, Aurelio Montes and his team truly nurture the fruit and deliver outstanding wines.”

Montes started vineyard operations in 1987 during a time when the Chilean wine market was satisfied producing low-quality bulk wine for export and consumption. Montes’ founding partners Aurelio Montes, Douglas Murray, Alfredo Vidaurre and Pedro Grand dreamed of making world-class wines from Chile. They achieved their goal with their “Alpha” line of wines, and Montes was named “Winemaker of the Year” by Wine Spectator in 2002 and 2006.

TGIC began 25 years ago as a wine import company with only a single Chilean winery in their portfolio. Their mission was to establish themselves as a leading international producer, importer and marketer of the finest wines in the world with a rich and diverse portfolio. Today, TGIC is proud to represent 18 wineries from around the world as a national importer. They also offer a large selection of select imported and domestic wines for wholesale in the state of California. TGIC’s Alex Guarachi is leading what he describes as “the newest era in wine from the oldest vines in the world.” Wine Enthusiast announced TGIC Importers, Inc. and Alex Guarachi their Importer of the Year in 2010.
